Who is moving?

I have 6 people living in my 4 bedroom house. Sounds big enough right? I mean really, growing up, there were typically not extra rooms for home offices, computers, extra TVs, gaming systems, etc, etc, etc. And often, kids even had to share (GASP!) rooms (I actually know some of those people!!!)!

At MY house, 1 bedroom is mine (well, I do share with my sweet husband!), 1 bedroom is for the twins, 1 bedroom is for the big boys and the 4th bedroom is what we call our "office" - it used to be the garage and we enclosed it a few years back to create a bedroom and laundry room. That room is now housing computers, desks, a couch, chair and a TV.

The problem is that the 2 people with the most stuff (twins) have the SMALLEST room. In that room are 2 mismatched cribs (it is not pretty, let me assure you), a dresser and 1 shelving organizer from IKEA. Not to mention the closet is jammed with toys.

Many of their toys reside in the entry way. I have been slowly weeding out the baby type toys. Trust me when I say we still have a lot of stuff - and this is just what is in their area - not their rooms. (Oh, and back off - I don't sit and organize toys and pick too much up during nap - honestly, I don't! Ignore the *messy* aspect, I'm just trying to give you a visual here! Geez!)

Anyhow.

So, my dilemma is 'do I move the twins to the office' and if so, when do I do it. I know it needs to be done, much to the dismay of my oldest, he will NOT be the one getting the largest room for himself. Just not going to happen. Please people, he will live, don't go all mushy on me. He will survive! This is the only viable option that I see (well, this is the only option that has us NOT selling any of our kids for profit and NOT moving). The advantage would be much of the *stuff* in the photos, could move in there with them!!! I could actually take back some of my space!

SO, WHAT'S THE PROBLEM you ask?!?! Oh, how would you like them listed? Time. Money. Man power. Time. Money. Man P... I could go on, but why continue to repeat myself?

Time: certainly you all must have WAY more than I do if you don't get this one right off the top. Setting aside time to switch rooms means that something will have to give. What would that be? Probably something like - oh, feeding people, getting food, taking care of my kids...just little stuff I guess :-).

Money: if I'm going to empty out the twins room, should I yank the carpet and lay the wood flooring at the same time? Wouldn't it be easier to do it before putting heavy furniture in there? I am completely happy with the $5 *someone screwed this up* paint that we threw on the wall 3 weeks before Wyatt was born 4 years ago. It's tan, plain and perfectly acceptable. It's just the floor. Then there's the point of the blackout shades that just got purchased for their room and have only been in there for a couple months...the TWO windows in their *new* room would now need them...ugh.

Man Power: while I'm not swapping houses like some people I know (yes, can you say moving suicide? Too bad we will be there watching it happen...but I digress.), swapping rooms can be just as tedious. I'm a clean as I move kind of girl so that doesn't help either. PLUS, if I'm swapping rooms, I have to get rid of some of the furniture from the office.

FOR SALE: Nice micro suede couch with reclining sides. Used very gently in a room my kids rarely visited (this is a plus, believe me). Very heavy, but very comfy as commented by each person who slept on it (no, no fold out bed). Our friend J will not be helping you move it, he swore 2 times ago "this is the LAST time we are moving this". I shudder to even think of how the conversation might go.

It is possible that you could purchase the matching chair as well! That would be very handy!

Plus, if I sold the couch, maybe I could afford at least the black out blinds (priority #1) in the *new room*.

So, here I sit, trying to decide what to do.

Ideas?

  1. okay, having been in your house, I TOTALLY agree that the littles need to go in the big room and their old room can be the office/video game room....Sell the couch, get the $$ for the blinds (which I REALLY need to put in my littles room) and while you're selling stuff, have a yard sale (like you have time for that - I've been trying to do one all summer long!)....maybe you can appease the big brothers about being in a smaller room by letting them pick a new color for said room? any way you shake it, you need to do it sooner, rather than later, and ALL of their stuff can go with them! can't wait to see what you do....hugs, Jessie

  2. Sounds like a great idea but like so many that I have, they need someone else to help me.
